VISIT LHASA - THE CAPITAL CITY OF TIBET


Lhasa (officially Lhasa Chengguan District) is a city and administrative capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China.[1] It forms a district, which is part of the wider Lhasa prefecture-level city area, formerly known as Lhasa Prefecture. It is the second most populous city on the Tibetan Plateau after Xining and, at an altitude of 3,490 metres (11,450 ft), Lhasa is one of the highest cities in the world. The city contains many culturally significant Tibetan Buddhist sites such as the Potala Palace, Jokhangtemple and Norbulingka palaces.

Seven Days Tour:

Day 1: Arriving at Lhasa. We will pick you up at your arrival point either the airport or the train station and then take you to your accommodation, where you may take a rest to adjust to the altitude and relax;

Day 2: In the morning, start your explorations by visiting Sera monastery: Sera Monastery, founded in 1419, is one of the 'great three' university monasteries of Tibet, to witness the Monk Debates on the teachings of Buddha and the philosophy of Buddhism. Then visit Norbulingka,  literally: "The Jewelled Park", a palace and surrounding park, which served as the traditional summer residence of the successive Dalai Lamas. In the afternoon, you can visit Drepung Monastery. This monastery, located at the foot of Mount Gephel, is another of the "great three" Gelukpa university monasteries of Tibet. It was the residence of the Dalai Lamas, until the Great Fifth Dalai Lama constructed the Potala Palace. After returning in the early evening, you can stay for a rest in Lhasa city;

Day 3: You can visit Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Market Streetand the Potola Palace, and then In the evening stay in Lhasa city to relax. The Jokhang temple was constructed by King Songtsän Gampo probably in 642. The famous Buddhist Master Atisha taught here in the 11th century and it has been considered the most important temple in Lhasa ever since, remaining a key centre of Buddhist pilgrimage for centuries. The Barkhor is an area of narrow streets and a public square located around Jokhang Temple, and was the most popular devotional circuit for pilgrims and locals. Now the area is famous for its multitude of market stalls, selling everything from devotional goods to silk cloth to trinkets and jewelry. There are also many restaurants selling both native and international cuisine. Later you will see the Potala Palace, which has 13 stories of buildings, containing over 1,000 rooms, 10,000 shrines and about 200,000 statues. The site was used as a meditation retreat by King Songtsen Gampo, who in 637 built the first palace there in order to greet his bride Princess Wen Cheng of the Tang Dynasty of China. The Dalai Lama and his government moved into the White Palace in 1649 and was used as a winter palace by the Dalai Lama from that time on;

Day 4: Travel from Lhasa to Gyantse monastery and stupa by crossing the Kamba la (4794m.) and the Karol la pass (5010m.) after which you will see the spectacular Yamdrok tso, also known as the Turquiose Lake, and then to Shigatse. Shigatse contains the huge Tashilhunpo Monastery, founded in 1447 by Gendun Drup, the First Dalai Lama. It is the traditional seat of the Panchen Lamas. In the 2nd week of the 5th lunar month (around June/July), Tashilhunpo Monastery is the scene of a 3-day festival and a huge thangka is displayed. Stay overnight in Shigatse;

Day 5: Morning, after breakfast, start driving from Shigatse along the road then the passes approaching Everest camp. Stop at Old Tingri town for lunch and a short rest. The road is a bit rough, on the way you will cross over Gyatsola Pass at 5,220m., which is the highest enroute pass. Afternoon travel to Everest Camp, taking about 2 hours. Spend the night at Everest Camp tent guesthouse (dorm beds in the tent).  Note: The entrance fee of Mt. Everest Base Camp is 180rmb/per person. Then Entry fee of the Landcruiser to E.B.C. is 400rmb. You will have a chance to see the sunset here over the majestic Himalayan peaks.

Day 6: In the morning, you will see the sunrise from Everest Base Camp, then return to Rongbuk Monastery and start driving back to Tingri,  and Tingri to Zhangmu, Stay overnight in Zhangmu.

Day 7: This is the customs town and port of entry located in Nyalam County on the Nepal - Tibet border, just uphill and across the Bhote Kosi River from the Nepalese town of Kodari. At 2300 meters above sea level, Zhangmu has mild and humid subtropical climate, which is a rarity for Tibet. Travel from Zhangmu to the China-Nepal Friendship Bridge, where you enter Nepal.
